Know before you go…call your long distance company for the facts before leaving home. International calls to the U.S. cost less than calls between and within foreign countries. Outside of the U.S., minimize hotel surcharges by dialing your long distance carrier’s access number instead of charging the call to your room. Also, use local public telephones to avoid excessive hotel charges. But beware. In Mexico, for example, privately owned public phones may be connected to international phone carriers that charge expensive fees for coin or collect calls and block access to big U.S. phone companies. Some countries may require you to use local coins or phone cards before placing your call. Most post offices, hotels and newsstands abroad sell phone cards. Also, consider buying international prepaid cards in the U.S. before traveling internationally.
