Internet Download Dialer Scam
It sounds like such a good deal. You can get access to an internet site with free job postings, chat rooms, casino gambling, and so on. All you have to do is download the required website viewer or dialer computer program.
Then you get a huge phone bill. What happened? The dialer program you downloaded bypassed your local internet access phone number and used an international number which charged you $350 an hour. The foreign area code functioned like a 900 toll number in the U.S. and foreign telephone company served as a third party billing service for the crook.
Self-defense tactics include downloading programs only from websites you know and trust. Also check the dialing properties control panel on your computer to see what number your modem is dialing.
Monitor your children’s internet use because they are frequent targets of this scam which does not require credit cards. Instead it charges your phone bill.
