It's Not Citibank...it's Phishing for Your Info
Phishing does not require a rod and reel. This type of phishing is a scam that uses e-mails to steal information from consumers.
Citibank is the latest corporation to find its logo being used by these scamsters on e-mails that claim to be from the company but in fact have nothing to do with Citibank.
One WTOP listener sent us the fake Citibank e-mail he received. It states that his Citibank checking account has new terms and conditions and that he must agree with them or his account will be suspended. It asks for personal financial information including his social security number.
Our listener knew something was wrong because he does not have a Citibank checking account, and as he writes, bells, whistles and flags went off when he took a look at the e-mail. If consumers with Citibank accounts receive this e-mail they may be tempted to fill it out in order to avoid having their accounts closed. The information can be used to steal someone’s identity.
